Is a vote for the Left Alliance party (Vasemmisto in Finnish) a wasted vote?

The Left Alliance party is a future oriented red green movement, which works for both environment protection and social justice.

Vasemmisto is also a rising star in Finnish politics which has a large impact on policy making at all levels!

Even in city councils where the Left Alliance group is small, we challenge other parties to make greener decisions that consider social equality.

Words are beautiful, but where are the actions? That is, has Arvind done anything at all in local decision making for advancing equality?

Yes! Even though the number of votes received in 2021 were not enough to become a city councillor, Arvind has been part of for example the Urban Environment Committee's decisions.

As an example, the committee decided about Helsinki's updated accessibility guidelines in spring 2022. Arvind was involved in proposing additions to the guidelines which were especially related to the built environment.

The changes were approved by all parties unanimously, and the city got updated accessibility guidelines for 2022-2025!

Sounds awesome! How can one support this concrete equality work? By voting for the Left Alliance party (vasemmisto in Finnish) to city councils, both in Helsinki and elsewhere!

In Finland, municipalities and cities have the council. The council is elected by residents every fours years through the local elections.

Even though in cities like Helsinki, the mayor and deputy mayors have a lot of responsibility, it is good to remember that the city council elected by city dwellers is the highest decision making body!

In other words, the distribution of power among different parties in the council is more important than who ends up becoming the mayor. For example, a strong Left party, like we have in Helsinki now with 11 out of 85 seats, ensures a good life for everyone, and not just the few!

Wow, I did not know that! Does this mean that one doesn't need to pay too much attention to who is the mayor candidate? Definitely not! It is good for voters to think about who would make the best decision maker. For example, experience, boldness, softness and ease of reaching out are important aspects that make the best mayor candidate.

Of course! But why does the Helsinki Left party have so many mayor candidates? Such as suburb mayor, sports mayor, library mayor, youth mayor and culture mayor? Actually, we only have one mayor candidate who wears many hats, Paavo Arhinmäki!

Is there any point in party politics anymore? In other words, is it even worth voting as a regular person?

It is understandable, that during a time of multiple crises across the world, party politics can sometimes seem absurd.

For example, animated discussions about issues concerning local politics can seem difficult to follow, when so many things are going in the wrong direction at both the national and international levels.

While local politics can in no way change the whole world, or even affect the whole country, it is still worth considering if small improvements to one's life would become possible by voting for certain parties. For example, would a walkable city be better than a tunnel for cars in the city centre in your case? Then maybe the choice becomes clearer, even if both would occur with the same government at the national level.

But all parties are equally bad! While it could indeed feel like that sometimes, some parties are actually less bad than others. In fact, one might even find good parties if one looks hard enough!

Alright, but even the good parties are too tame! If one feels that way, one can always find more radical candidates from the same party's list!

Great, but it is not even possible to solve so many issues through party politics! Indeed, party politics and voting are only one way to build a better tomorrow among many. For example, demonstrations, strikes, organisations are some of the others. And there is no such thing as a silver bullet!

So is it then good to consider voting, even if one is not completely convinced about the benefits gained by participating in party politics as a voter? Exactly, because an active voter gets to have a central role in painting the future! And a better future is build vote by vote, piece by piece!

It's a done deal then, on the way to cast a vote! Fantastic! Remember to get to know the parties and their candidates through their campaign first! Have a great election spring!

Is it dangerous to vote for the Left alliance party (vasemmisto)? That is, is a voter taking a big risk by doing so?

The Left party is a future oriented red-green movement. It is an umbrella, under which there is space for everyone to dream about a better future.

But I hear that the Left part wants to cancel everything. Definitely not! The only thing we want to cancel is outdated ways of doing things that increase discrimination, and build wellbeing for everyone instead. In other words, we want to reimagine how we shape our society!

Alright, but we have red and green in Finnish politics as their own parties. Why do we need the Left party then? Because climate change cannot be stopped without a critique of capitalism, nor can everyone's wellbeing be ensured if we do not take the environment into account.

Of course! But some proposals of the Left party sound too radical. Indeed, new ideas often sound outrageous, but we are currently living during times of eco-social crisis. Hence, we need bold dreams everywhere!

That is true. But can't the Left party sometimes make compromises too? Definitely! That is why the Left party collaborates with other parties, for example in the municipal councils and in the parliament.

Did I understand correctly then, that by voting for the Left party (Vasemmistoliitto in Finnish), I am supporting wellbeing for everyone? Exactly! We have a clear goal, and we work towards it with a diverse team.
