Budget cuts and city council politics. The City of Helsinki made almost 500 million euros in profit last year. But so called “modern” politicians continue to cut tens of millions of euros from services for the most vulnerable, including children! The budget cuts are so unbelievable, that one wonders: Do these politicians have no clue? But the budget cuts that are continuing in the middle of a crisis are part of a long term strategy. A strategy through which in the name of modernising, the welfare state is systematically weakened. And private gains are increased instead. To put it simply, yes, these politicians do have every clue about what they are doing. The question is, do we as city dwellers have a clue about how to change this situation?
