Workers’ situation in Finland today. We are currently living in challenging times. Workers have a lot of things happening around that add to one’s daily worries, that one sometimes wonders where to even start! Matti is an immigrant working in an office. They are worried about the general move away from collective agreements, suggestions that international workers be paid less for the same work, lack of enough support for family members, and continuously changing rules about working rights. Ylva is a single parent who works in the fast spreading gig economy. She is concerned about constant cuts to school budgets, accelerating climate change, reduction in support for families with children, and under-resourced public services. Lauri is a resident in a suburb, and earns their living in a factory. They can’t stop thinking about the local health centre that was moved across town, neighbourhood forests that have been chopped down for new development, rising living costs, and the dreaded lay-off negotiations at the workplace. Pedro is a young father who produces cultural events. He has found it difficult to ignore the effects of the pandemic on his income, cutbacks in support for the arts, longer distances to travel for work gigs, and rise in housing costs. Yes, we will all be able to survive this as well, but only if we do it together! Workers of the land, unite! Back to cartoons menu
